Ten ways to Encourage Creative Thinking?

Attempting to engage professionals in innovative technology can be a difficult task, it can also be a formidable challenge. In an attempt to create the most innovative (and creative) experiences for our students we need to offer professional development opportunities for teachers so that they can develop confidence and feel supported in their own journey. According to icaew.com (an accounting firm) there are several ways that you can promote creativity (and innovation) in staff. Here is their list of ten:

1. Stress the importance of creativity

2. Make time for brainstorming

3. Actively solicit ideas

4. Train staff in innovation techniques

5. Cross-fertilize

6. Challenge the way staff work

7. Be supportive

8. Tolerate mistakes

9. Reward creativity

10. Act on ideas

The biggest concern that many teachers have in implementing creativity and innovation is the amount of 'time' that it takes. These suggestions, through their explanations offer suggestions on how to address that issue. Time needs to be 'given,' in order to give staff an opportunity to actively explore ideas and theories presented through professional development sessions. While it is important to be supportive, teachers should also be challenged to creatively innovate many portions of their practice.
